I didn’t even realise Project Vend was a real, life experiment.
I’d seen it mentioned in passing when using Claude, but only read the full write-up today. Turns out Anthropic actually ran an AI shopkeeper that managed a real vending machine inside their own office.
What really stood out to me is the contrast with how AI agents are often talked about online. You see a lot of bold claims on YouTube and LinkedIn about “AI can run your business” or “AI agents can make millions autonomously”.
This is one of the leading AI companies in the world, deploying their own models in a controlled, internal environment and even then it struggled to reliably make money.
Great experiment from Anthropic and a useful reality check against some of the hype.
